About Board Membership
The Blue Hill Public Library Board of Directors (aka Board Members or Trustees) and Library Director work together to ensure outstanding library services to the Blue Hill Peninsula and all who visit the library. In support of our mission and in accordance with the library’s by-laws, the Board is comprised of between 6 and 15 volunteers representing a variety of backgrounds, interests and skills, who come together to fulfill the library’s mission. The Library Director is accountable to the Board of Directors and the Board is accountable to the Membership.*
The library’s Governance Committee is charged with overseeing board development, including organizing nominations to the board to be considered at the Annual Meeting of the Membership (typically held each spring—see meeting schedule below). The committee recommends a slate of nominations for consideration by Members who are present.
Directors are elected by the Membership to serve a term of 3 years, with a maximum eligibility of 3, 3-year terms, or 9 years. Each Director serves on a variety of board-designated committees, as appointed by the Board President. Read about the Blue Hill Public Library Board Member Duties and Responsibilities.
Board service is one important way of many to make a contribution to the library and community and your interest in Board service is encouraged and welcome. If you are interested, please feel free to email the Library Director, who will connect you with the Chair of the Governance Committee. If, after communicating with the chair of the Governance Committee you are interested in serving on the BHPL Board, please fill out this application and drop it off at the library, mail, or email it to Rich Boulet, rboulet[at]bhpl.net.
In considering nominations to the Board of Directors, the Governance Committee weighs and balances many needs, depending upon ever-changing circumstances. Individual skills, personal attributes, availability to serve, overall board composition and diversity are a few of the considerations.
*Membership is defined as any adult who is a current cardholder of the library in good standing, or a person who has made a financial donation to the library within 12 months prior to the Annual Meeting
