Supporting BHPL

There are lots of ways to support BHPL.  Here is more information about some of them!

Annual Fund

Reading togetherApproximately one quarter of the library’s budget is provided by the Annual Fund. The library raises money for the Annual Fund through a general mailing in the fall as well as direct solicitation of individuals, corporations, and foundations. Donations to the Annual Appeal may be made at any time during the year online or by sending a check to:

Any donation to the library can become a memorial gift by notifying us who you would like to memorialize or honor. These donations are published in our annual newsletter donor list. Books or furnishings given “in memory of” or “in honor of” individuals may be designated by a memorial bookplate or plaque.  We are happy to notify either family of a memorial gift, or the individual being honored.

Securities

The library accepts gifts of stock, or other securities, such as bonds or mutual funds. These gifts can make an immediate impact on our work and might provide significant tax savings for you. More details and transfer instructions here.

Matching Gifts

Student with artworkMany businesses and organizations provide matching gifts for employee donations. This is a great way to double or sometimes triple your gift to the library. Check with your company administration to see if your company will match your donation and get a copy of any necessary forms.  Either send the form in with your donation, or within a year of making the gift, and BHPL will take care of the rest.

Restricted Gifts

As long as they are consistent with the mission of the library, gifts can be designated for special programs or areas of interest of the donor.  Call the Library Director to discuss your ideas.

Teens at the libraryBusiness Sponsorship

The library is proud to partner with area businesses through direct donations to our Annual Fund or financial and in-kind support of library fundraising events.  Paint the Peninsula is one annual opportunity to show your support for BHPL.  Sponsors are acknowledged in event signage, promotion and program guides. For more information on the many ways to support BHPL go here or contact the library’s development office at 374-5515 ext. 16.

Planned Giving

The Blue Hill Public library accepts bequests of cash, securities, or other property made through your estate plans. Bequests typically go toward the Blue Hill Public Library’s endowment where they provide perpetual support for the library’s mission. The library depends on its endowment to cover a sizeable portion of the library’s operating budget. The library would not be possible without the generous legacy gifts left to the library by loyal patrons, beginning with Adelaide Pearson whose financial support and vision made the Blue Hill Public Library what it is today. Significant bequests are honored with membership in the Adelaide Pearson Society.

Contact the development office for more information on how to leave the library a bequest.  The library’s official name and Tax ID # is: Blue Hill Public Library # 01-0212602.

Non-monetary Gifts

A child readingGifts of art, books, and other tangible objects will be accepted in accordance with the library gift policy as long as no conditions are attached. Click here to learn about our Friends’ Book Acceptance Guidelines for possible gifts to the library booksale.

The library has been particularly fortunate in the past in receiving fine paintings, sculpture, furniture, equipment and estate items from donors. Such gifts are accepted at the discretion of the library board with the recommendation of the library director. Although the library will acknowledge such gifts for tax purposes, the library staff is not authorized to appraise such gifted materials. It is the donor’s responsibility to obtain the appraisal prior to transfer of ownership to the library.

The Friends of the Library raise money, primarily through used book sales, to support various library programs and activities not covered in the operating budget. Examples of the Friends of the Library activities include movies, lectures, receptions, and special children’s programs. The Friends have also purchased furniture, audio-visual equipment, and DVDs for the library. Ways to support the Friends include becoming a member by designating $10 of your donation to the library to FOL, volunteering, donating used books and shopping at their used book sales.  See the menu above for more information about our wonderful Friends.
