BHPL Board Member: Daniel Coit

After a 40-year career of clinical care, teaching and clinical research, Dr. Daniel Coit retired from his active role in the Department of Surgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) in 2025. He received his Bachelors Degree from Yale University in 1971, before completing his MD at the University of Cincinnati. He completed his surgical residency at the New England Deaconess Hospital in Boston and finished his training in the surgical oncology fellowship at MSKCC. He was named Chief Administrative Fellow in his second year.

Dr. Coit’s career and passion for research led to several leadership roles including Chief of the  Gastric and Mixed Tumor Service at MSK, co-leader of the Melanoma and the Gastric Disease Management Teams at MSKCC, Director of MSKCC Surgical Education, Chair of the Training Committee of the Society of Surgical Oncology, President of the Society of Surgical Oncology, and more. He was awarded the Willet Whitmore award for clinical excellence and was named departmental Teacher of the Year on three occasions.

A lifelong seasonal resident of Blue Hill, Dr. Coit has a deep and abiding appreciation for the Blue Hill Peninsula and sees being on the Board of Directors for the library as a way to give back to his beloved community.
