The Blue Hill Public Library will present “Visions of Light” an “exploration in translating light to paint” by Orrington artist Judy Holder. The exhibition features paintings, in oil, acrylic, and gouache, on display at the library from March 2 through March 30. The public is invited to a reception on Saturday, March 7, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.
These works represent many days of plein air painting, weather permitting, as well as
days of working in the studio, as Judy says, “remembering the sunlight, and the joyful
feeling of being in it.” Some of her favorite places to paint include Stonington, with its
working harbor, and the quiet Schoodic Peninsula, with its majestic rocks and ocean.
She says that the process of painting outside is not just about the artwork itself, but “how
it feeds the light in me, and fuels inspiration for future paintings.” She hopes these
paintings spark the light in you.
About her work, she says, “I choose my palette colors, my composition sketch and
design techniques to lead the viewer’s eye around the canvas. I want people to look at my paintings and wander through them like a hike: to feel the water, the sun, the fog or
the warmth of the day.”
Judy Holder is a South Carolina-born artist whose journey has brought her to Maine.
She earned her BFA in sculpture and painting at Lyme Academy College of Fine Art in
Old Lyme, CT. She has continued her education through self-study and maintains a
daily art practice, both studio and plein air, as a professional artist from her studio in
Orrington, ME. Judy has exhibited at galleries and art fairs throughout the U.S. Her
work can currently be found at Deer Isle Artists’ Association (in summer), Full Fathom
Five Gallery in Eastport and Small Wonder Gallery in Camden.
The exhibition will be available for viewing during library hours through March 30, with
access to artwork in the Howard Room subject to the meeting schedule. For more
