The Blue Hill Public Library will present an exhibition “Midcoast Maine Book Arts: Recent Work,” in the library’s Howard Room Glass Cases, opening September 4 and running through December 28. The exhibition features the work of 18 book artists in a wide variety of mediums, structures, vocabularies, and philosophies that define the term “artist books.” The public is invited to a reception at the library on Friday September 12, 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.
Artist Karen Olson, of Hope, Maine, says about her book, “Cultivation the Heart Sense,” “My passion lies in uncovering both the scientific and soulful aspects of my subjects.”
Midcoast Maine Book Arts is a collective formed to promote, encourage, and educate working and aspiring book artists in Maine’s mid-coast area. The group seeks to exhibit the work of its members and other book artists, host workshops about artists’ books, and build interest in the general public about this art form. The collective meets six times throughout the year to plan exhibitions, and to help one another in an open discussion. Other events include field trips and casual “play dates” to enjoy learning something new in a smaller setting.
The exhibition can be viewed during library hours, subject to the Howard Room meeting room schedule. For more information, contact the library at 374-5515. To learn more about the group, email sandy.weisman2@gmail.com.
