Who we are: The Friends of the Blue Hill Library is a volunteer group that raises funds for a variety of library purposes not covered by the library’s operating budget. Each year we raise over $9000 through used book sales, Friends’ membership fees and donations, as well as book and food sales at the annual May plant sale. Our book sales are held the first Saturday of every month (and every Saturday during July and August). There is also a sales shelf of books on the second floor of the library, near the computers. These books can be purchased at any time and include both paperbacks (50-cents) and a few hardcover books ($1). In addition, we have books available for sale in a book cart in the main reception room at the Blue Hill Memorial Hospital.
What we support: Friends’ funds support a variety of children’s programs throughout the year. In addition, we typically fund adult programs that might include: Great Decisions foreign policy discussions, Opera Previews, Play Readings, and a variety of lectures, musical and other events. We also assist the library by purchasing needed items that in the past have included tapes and DVDs, furniture and book carts, audio-visual equipment, staff appreciation gifts and assistance to help staff participate in outside educational opportunities. Membership and benefits: Friends’ memberships are $10 per household per year with renewal in October. In addition to supporting library activities with these fees, members receive The Library Page, a newsletter published nine times each year, that describes Friends’ activities and usually includes a list of new library books purchased during that period (a great way to know your favorite new title is available). Volunteer opportunities change over time but generally include
- book sales – help sort and shelve books, or work on sale days;
- bake cookies or savory snacks for Holiday or other Friends events;
- work on membership, publicity, newsletter, fund-raising, or website tasks;
- assist with adult or children’s programs.
