Where does a Plant & Soil Science student go a couple years after graduation? Greg decided on Antarctica, where he spent six months working at McMurdo Station. Upon returning to Massachusetts and fatefully connecting with Hannah Webber, his partner of 35 years, they decided to venture across various countries to the Arctic Circle in search of Arctic char of course! Travel adventures continued through the following decades, including scuba diving in Cuba with 14 year old daughter Katie, but the Blue Hill Peninsula is where Greg & Hannah have made their home, settling in Surry in 1996. It is there, surrounded by woods, where Greg is blissful, leaving the hubbub of Mount Desert & Ellsworth behind every evening, as he returns home from Jackson Lab where he is Grounds & Garage supervisor.

Greg first walked into BHPL in 1997 as he searched for a restroom during a landscaping workday on Tenney Hill. In the years that followed, the family, including Baxter (now a traveling nurse) and Katie (now a sophomore at Emory College), became regular visitors at BHPL; and Greg discovered that he could borrow The Princess Bride, a favorite DVD, and look for any Kurt Vonnegut books he might have missed in his earlier years.

Surely, it was Greg’s prowess on the ice during hockey games that impressed Director Rich Boulet enough to ask if he might be interested in joining the library board in 2015. (Note from Rich: “She’s kidding. Greg’s not that good at hockey.”) Since then Greg has taken on a leading role on the Building & Grounds Committee and the Plant Sale, and serves on the Strategic Planning & the Executive Committees where his organizational skills, clarity, and good humor are always an asset.  -Eleni Koenka, Board Vice President
