The Children’s Larchwood Room Case at the Blue Hill Library has a new exhibit by the Falcons Homeschool Community’s K-8 Sedgwick class. Falcons students make most of their own learning supplies and study themes that tie several subjects together, so this display shows their work with cell biology, mathematics, writing, and the history of printing and bookbinding. The crowning piece is a portion of the scale model of their classroom that they made with the help of the Haystack Fab Lab, a cutting-edge digital fabrication and technology studio at the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Deer Isle.
Younger students practiced measurement, middle students practiced scale, and the oldest students practiced precision by plotting all of the data into Cuttle, a laser cutting design program. All of the students worked together on assembly, including some fun creative approaches to mimicking the room’s wallpaper in miniature. This coming year, we will make the dolls and furniture! The exhibit will be at the library through the end of October.
