The Visual Literature of Warren Lehrer

The Blue Hill Public Library invites the community to join an online presentation on Thursday, July 30th at 7:00 PM, “The Visual Literature of Warren Lehrer,” with guests Judith Sloan and Dennis J Bernstein. Artist/author Warren Lehrer, known as a “pioneer of visual literature and design authorship,” will present an overview of his books and multimedia projects. Lehrer will be joined by two of his longtime collaborators: his wife the actress/author Judith Sloan, and Dennis J Bernstein (host of “Flashpoints” aired nightly on WERU).

Summer residents of the Blue Hill Peninsula, Lehrer and Sloan have collaborated on many projects including “Crossing the BLVD” (W.W. Norton) and “1001 Voices: A Symphony for a New America.” The presentation will conclude with a reading/performance of excepts from a new book of visual poems, “Five Oceans in a Teaspoon,” visualized by Lehrer, written by Bernstein. “Five Oceans” won this year’s Independent Publisher (IPPY) Gold Medal in Poetry. According to the New York Times Book Review, “In Lehrer’s books, words take on thought’s very form, bringing sensory experience to the reader as directly as ink on paper can allow.”

This online Zoom presentation is sponsored by the library. It is free and everyone is welcome, but advance registration is required through the library’s online calendar to receive the link to join. Copies of “Five Oceans in a Teaspoon” are available for sale at Blue Hill Books, for in-store purchase, porch pickup, or shipping.
