June 29, 2022 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm
Tweens and Teens are invited to join Teen Services Librarian Kendall Chapman and Blue Hill Heritage Trust Outreach Coordinator Landere Naisbitt for a summer hiking book club. For the months of June, July and August participants are invited to read a pre-selected book before meeting for a hike on a Blue Hill Heritage Trust trail. The selected books have ties to nature and will relate to our hiking location, which will be discussed at a special spot on the trail.
On Wednesday, June 29 at 2:30 PM, we will be hiking the Heart of Blue Hill Trail System to discuss the book The Words in my Hands by Asphyxia. "Smart, artistic, and independent, sixteen year old Piper is tired of trying to conform. Her mom wants her to be 'normal,' to pass as hearing, to get a good job. But in a time of food scarcity, environmental collapse, and political corruption, Piper has other things on her mind– like survival. Piper has always been told that she needs to compensate for her Deafness in a world made for those who can hear. But when she meets Marley, a new world opens up– one where Deafness is something to celebrate, and where resilience means taking action, building a community, and believing in something better. This empowering, unforgettable story is told through a visual extravaganza of text, paint, collage, and drawings."
Copies of this book will be available to check out in advance at the library, though there will be a limited number of copies for participants to take and keep. Comfortable clothes, shoes, bug spray, sunscreen and water or snacks are recommended to bring with you for the hiking portion of this event. We will meet at the Parker Point Trail Head.
All are welcome to join, though space is limited. Register through the library's interactive calendar or by calling 374-5515. This is a free program co-sponsored by the library and Blue Hill Heritage Trust.
