Maria Mathews, in her seventh year as a library board member, has been very involved in many aspects of the library. She is the chair of the Collections Committee, and a member of both the Development and Personnel Committees. She has combined her passions for plants and art by co-chairing the Plant Sale and chairing Paint the Peninsula.
Maria grew up in the Midwest where she received a Master’s in Photography and Fine Arts from Cranbrook Academy of Art. She moved to New York City, where she became an instructor at the International Center for Photography. In 2005, after many years as a summer visitor, she moved to Blue Hill full time with her husband, and two sons, then 4th and 7th graders. She continued her interest in teaching photography by mentoring students on photography projects at the Bay School and George Stevens Academy, where both of her very musically talented sons were students, and where she also volunteered in other capacities. Currently, when Maria is not to be found at the library, she may be serving soup and making deliveries for the Simmering Pot, where she is a board member, and volunteering with Healthy Peninsula, gardening or pursuing her own career as a multimedia artist. — By Macy Lasky
