October 2, 2019 - November 30, 2019
Blue Hill Public Library is hosting an exhibit, A Selection of Handmade Books, by Orland artist Kristy Cunnane from October 2nd through November 30th. New works and past creations will be on display in the Howard Room glass cases. The public is invited to an opening reception, which will be held during the Word Blue Hill Literary Arts Festival, from 3:00 to 5:00 PM on Saturday, October 26th. All are welcome!
According to Kristy, “artists’ books expand the notion of what a book might be. In this case, books may or may not have text, yet each book has something to say. Artists’ books are inviting. They open in various ways- unfolding in a sequence of pockets or layered images. They are tunnels or windows to peer through.”
Kristy Cunnane is a long time visual artist and bookmaker. She says she is inspired by this art form because of the way it allows for interaction between image, text, and structure. Her work is inspired by the natural world, and by the interplay of ordinary events and objects within our lives. Kristy works with a variety of media, including detailed pen and ink drawings, sumi ink illustrations, paper cuts, prints and mixed media. Her bookmaking has expanded to include a range of small zines, a selection of which will be available for purchase at the opening.
The exhibit is available for viewing during library hours through November 30th, subject to the Howard Room meeting schedule. For more information call the library at 374-5515.
